A Brief History of Bethany Church Minimize

Bethany Church was established in March 1924 under the direction of the Reverend Anna Britton. Anna Britton was an associate of the Reverend Aimee Semple McPherson, founder of Angelus Temple in Los Angeles. Bethany Church was an independent pentecostal church with close ties to the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel and also the Assemblies of God.

Almost immediately upon its formal establishment as a church, the Reverend Dr. Claire Britton became its pastor. Dr. Claire Britton was the son of the Reverend Anna Britton. The church enjoyed steady growth and became a prominent church in the San Gabriel Valley. In 1965 Bethany Church membership voted to officially affiliate with the Southern California District of the Assemblies of God, a relationship which continues to this day.

Pastoral leadership for Bethany Church includes:
Dr. Claire Britton, 1924 - 1965
Reverend Kenneth Haystead, 1965 -1974
Dr. Everett Stenhouse, 1974 -1979
Reverend John Thompson, 1979 -1980
Dr. Don Gregg, 1980 -1992
Dr. Phil Hilliard, 1993 -

From within this thriving congregation, many ministries have been founded which have had international outreach: Far East Broadcasting Company; Haven of Rest; Airmail From God; Back Country Evangelism; English Language Institute; Transworld Mission, to name a few. Additionally, many men and women have gone out from Bethany Church into many facets of the Lord's work including, pastors, evangelists, district and national executives, Bible school and seminary teachers and missionaries.

Bethany Church is a contemporary, multiethnic, pentecostal church which is ministering to the San Gabriel Valley. We welcome your questions if you want more information about our church.
